Substantive Post #1 – Challenge B
This video is geared towards students that are roughly middle school aged, this video does a great job taking a big concept (Newtons 3 Laws) and breaking them down even further than their individual laws. This is a great example of segmentation, he does a good job breaking down the aspects of each law. He breaks each Law into a few main points and describes them each individually ties it together at the end. This helps anyone watching learn smaller pieces at a time and then apply that knowledge to the next step.
Another multimedia strategy that is implemented in this video is the dual coding theory. This theory says that our brain has 2 systems for absorbing information and they operate independently from one another. The distinction between these 2 paths is that one handles verbal information while the other handles images. The narrator does a great job applying this principle as he talks they provide animations to help the audience visualize what he is saying, immediately reinforcing his words. The reason this is so effective is because the 2 paths operate separately, they also have their individual cognitive capacities, so by using each of them instead of one, we increase the cognitive capacity and increase learning.
The other main multimedia theory that was implemented in this video was the limited capacity principle. The creators did a great job keeping this video concise and to the point, not wasting any of our limited brain capacity. Another thing he did to help minimize cognitive overload was talking in a very conversational tone and not using to many big scientific words, this helps us to grasp the concept without using brain space to decipher these words.
